The 93rd Highlanders
The photographs in this special commission diorama represent, in 54mm metal figures, a moment in history.
Whilst the Light Brigade were making there famous Charge at Balaclava, some two thousand Russian cavalry attempted to attack the British Camp. The 93rd Highlanders had been ordered to defend the encampment. Seeing the fast approaching Russians, the 93rd deployed in a two man deep line across the horsemens path.
Standing steady, the Highlanders let loose several volleys which first stopped the enemy and then saw them flee. A journalist who witnessed the action wrote that, “A thin red line, tipped with steel stood, then defeated the enemy”. Thus was born the famous phrase, so oft used to describe British Infantry as, ‘The Thin Red Line’.
